LADAKH TOURS Duration :
6 Nights / 7 Days Day 01: Delhi -
Leh
Transfer to airport for flight to Leh. Arrive Leh, transfer
to hotel, rest of the morning at leisure. After lunch
visit Local Bazaar.
Ladakh
The mountain of Ladakh is not spectacular. As even the
valleys are at an altitude of 3,500 mt the summits are
only 3,000 mt higher. Because it is desert there is
little snow on them and they look like big brown hills.
They are dry and dusty, with clusters of willows and
desert roses along the streams, yet Ladakh is a completely
magical palace, remote with delightful, gentle, un-grasping
people.
Land
4 mountain ranges cross Ladakh – Gt. Himalaya
Zanskar, Ladakh and Karakoram – as do the Indus
and its tributaries, Zanskar, Shingo and Shyok. Ladakh
also has the world’s largest glaciers outside
the Polar Regions, and the large and beautiful lake
Pangong Tso, 150 kms long and 4 kms wide at a height
of 4,000 mt.
People
There are four main groups: the Mons, nomads of Aryan
stock, are usually professional entertainers, often
musician; the Dards are found along the Indus valley,
many converted to Islam, though some remained Buddhist;
Tibetan from the bulk of the population in Central and
Eastern Ladakh, though they have assumed the Ladakhi
identity over generations; the Baltis with Central Asian
Saka origins, mostly live in the Kargil region.

Day 02 : In Leh, Sightseeing
Morning visit Spituk, Phyang and Stok. Afternoon free.
Overnight in Hotel.
Spituk - is the oldest Delgupta monastery
in the Indus valley, dating from 15th Century. It is
interesting to note that the Delgupta monks created
the precedent of building monasteries on hilltops, rather
than on valley floors. This follows the Tibetan notion
that the higher the monastery sites, the closer it is
to the Gods. There was certainly no political significance
attached to its strategic sting at the time. Nowadays
Spituk administers Shanker monastery in Leh and also
the Stokh village monastery.
Phyang
- it was founded in the 16th century by king
Tashi Namgyal, for a Lama he had invited to establish
the Digungpa order (branch of the Kagyupa order). A
prayer pole marks the place from which one can see the
monastery and signifies that, from this point on, criminals
escape punishment.
Stok
Stok is on the West bank of the Indus and close to the
lamsar bridge. This is the royal palace dating from
the 1840 when the king of Ladakh was deposed by the
invading Dogra forces. The Place museum at Stok is a
showpiece for the royal thanks, royal crown, dresses,
coins, precious stones and turquoise head dresses.
Day 03 : Day return excursion to Alchi
via Likir .
Leave after breakfast from Hotel for Alchi en-route
visits Likir monastery.
Lekir
The monastery which has clay Buddha statues. The monastery
was built during the reign of Lachen Gyalpo who installed
600 monks here, headed by Lhawang Chosje ( C 1088).
The gompa was invested with a collection of fine images,
thankas and murals to vie with those at Alchi.
Alchi
Alchi has a large temple complex and is regarded as
one of the most important Buddhists centers in Ladakh
and a jewel of monastic skill. There are five shrines
in the Choskor complex (11th Century) which has some
splendid wall painted wooden flags, a reminder perhaps
of the presence in ancient times of lakes in this desert.

Day 04 : Fullday visit of Hemis/Shey and Thiksey
monastery
Leave after breakfast for fullday visit of Hemis/Shey
and Thiksey monastery. Pack lunch will be served. Overnight
in Hotel. Hemis
The
position of Hemis monastery lying in a small isolated
valley south of the Indus, belies its importance. As
headquarters of the Drukpa (Old Buddhist) order, it
administers monasteries throughout the whole Ladakh
- from the Indus to the Zanskar valley and from the
Markha to the Sumdah valley. Hemis was established at
the behest of Senge Namgyal in the early 17th century
and since than has enjoyed the patronage of the royal
family of Ladakh. It provides monks as caretaker for
royal monasteries at the Basgo, Leh and Shey palaces.
Shey
The former palace of upper Ladakh before Leh was established,
this site commanded an important vantage over the Indus
valley. Since 1834 however, after the royal family moved
to Stokh, much of the palace and fort fell into disrepair;
even the marshland immediately below was once a clear
lake.
Thiksey
One of the most imposing monasteries in the Indus valley,
Thiksey was part of the original Delgupta order in the
15th century. The monk’s quarter’s stretch
right the way along the hillside beneath the main assembly
hall. The library at Thiksy is supposedly one of the
finest in Ladakh and a multi - denominations Gompa has
recently been constructed - proof indeed of the continuing
vitality of Buddhism in Ladakh. |

Day
05 : Leh - Khardon la - Leh
Leave hotel after breakfast for day excursion of Khardong
la, the highest motorable road in the world . The line
of the road is different from that of the old pony trail
longer and actually higher ( 18,300 ft. ) The view from
the top of the pass is amizing. One can see the way south
over the Indus valley to the seemingly endless peaks and
ridges of the Zanskar range, the morth to the giants of
the Seser massif. After spending some time at the pass
drive back to Leh for overnight stay.
Day 06 : In Leh
Fullday at leisure. Overnight in Hotel
Day 07 : Leh - Delhi
Transfer to Leh airport for flight to Delhi |
